Mums in Business // Sirinya @ Little Hope & Co

If you are pregnant, or have a young baby, you’ve probably already heard of this product. Sirinya and her cocoons have taken NZ by storm, with their unique and innovative recipe of kind and sustainable ingredients.

Welcome Sirinya to The Secret Coffee Group! Tell us about you…

My name is Sirinya. I am 29 years old married with one beautiful girl and another one on the way! Moved to New Zealand from Thailand in 2000 and have been nursing until I had my first baby and she changed our whole world – in such a great way.

What finally gave you the inspiration to set up your own business?

I originally wanted to go back to nursing as soon as possible but once I gave birth, I had a bit of identity crisis not knowing what really changed within me. Then I met Jen and did a value test that really made me think differently about what priorities are now and what I will do about it. What’s been the shining moment so far?
Being able to help other parents- the feedbacks I get, they inspire me and grow the business. I have had mothers who said I have helped them with their Antenatal/Postnatal depression whether it’s just through talking, my blog or my product and of course mothers who absolutely love travelling with our cocoons.

How are you finding it balancing home life, children and your new mini empire?

It is not easy at times but being able to be more flexible has helped with spending time with my daughter. There are pros and cons, some days my brain just won’t stop going and I can’t sleep but hubby has been really supportive which helps a lot.

What’s been the biggest challenge thus far?

Being pregnant while running the business! Brain is sometimes a bit more active than my body can handle haha.

What’s next?

Getting our products out there, continuing to provide information of why we choose the resources we did. We also have some new products coming VERY SOON. So excited! We want to continue growing and evolving with ourselves and our customers.

If you could give advice to a mum starting a business what would it be?

Believe in what you do and believe in yourself because there will be many times where your beliefs are tested and questioned. I still struggle with this at times but know why you choose to do what you do.

Mums in Business – Anna @ Press Play Productions

I was lucky enough last week to meet Anna of Press Play Productions. Her emotional connection to her business really showcased The Mumtrepreneur in it’s natural habitat, and I left our meeting feeling inspired. Ladies… Meet Anna!

Welcome Anna to The Secret Coffee Group! Tell us mums about you.

I am a wife and a mum of two gorgeous little boys, Hunter and Toby. And I am a new business owner. Press Play is all about creating meaningful content from home videos. It is predominantly a user generated content production company but can cater with videography as well. I can help families with time capsule videos, couples with an affordable wedding video and small businesses with content for websites or social media platforms.

What finally gave you the inspiration to set up your own business?

I created a video invitation for Hunter’s 3rd birthday party – I felt the best way to present him was via video, we have so much fantastic footage of our boys, and Hunter is a real character. It appeared to me that there may be an opportunity here, I needed to explore this more.

Toby was still up in the night when I decided on the concept and offering, I felt like I couldn’t not do it. If I get an idea, I will think about it all the time. I’d come to bed after feeding Toby and tell my husband,’ I know my tagline’, ‘I know what I’m going to call it’.

After more thought, research and discussing the idea with friends and family it just felt like everything was pointing to it, it just made sense – I had to just go for it.  It felt like all of my professional experience lead me to this, it was like “of course, this is the perfect next step for me”.

What’s been the shining moment so far?

The buzz that I get from the family videos is really special – seeing those videos of when a little one is born, the ‘first time’ moments; it is all so humbling. Working on one of the early family ‘Time Capsule’ videos and discovering that this is a real opportunity and I’m creating something really special for that family. And knowing the kids will enjoy them too!

How are you finding it balancing home life, children and your new mini empire?

It is a tug of war emotionally sometimes. It’s the most vulnerable I’ve felt in terms of putting myself out there, this is a creative process after all – which can be a bit daunting sometimes. I started without my youngest in childcare and found it hard with my attention divided. Now we have Toby in a wonderful daycare I feel like I’m a better mum and business owner. The balance was hard in the beginning. You do need help – to share the load, to achieve you goals and dreams. I’m lucky that Matt, my husband, is a great dad and a great support. There is no line at home as to who does what. This makes a huge difference!

What’s been the biggest challenge thus far?

For me, it’s that my offering is new and unique, and that with marketing my business, a simple quarter page ad in a magazine won’t work. I need to talk about what I do. Just getting the word out there that this is available, and deciding how best to do that has been quite difficult.  The family videos that I create are so personal, so my portfolio of projects is not always something that can be shared. But I believe in this offering so much, I know that families will love it so I just need to plan a little better and put some time and energy into appropriate and effective marketing.  I am excited about this.

What’s next for Press Play NZ?

As I said previously, marketing my business effectively and getting my offering out there  – I want to be recognized as a reliable and quality service provider in terms of video content, and for parents to see that this is an investment in your families precious memories.

If you could give advice to a mum starting a business what would it be?

Not to steal another well known tagline, but really – just do it. And mistakes are ok!  Also, do the research and leg work before launching your business, get some interest and intrigue about your offering via your social media platforms before launching, get people excited about your business before it’s up and running.

Check Anna out NOW via the links below. I can highly recommend hanging out with her too – she’s awesome!

Mums in Business – Joi @ Oh Bambino

This weekend we speak to Joi, Owner and Founder of Oh Bambino; a stunning boutique for little boys. Oh Bambino has absolutely the most adorable outfits EVER, from regal Prince George style formal wear, to classic kiwi checkered onesies. I wish the boat shoes came in my size…

Welcome Joi of Oh Bambino, to The Secret Coffee Group! Tell us all about you…

I am 26 and from Germany. I first moved to New Zealand as a teenager with my parents, then moved back to Germany on my own before coming back 3 years ago and meeting my (also German) husband here 🙂 Our two sons, identical twins, just turned 1 and after a difficult start to their lives (they were born at 28 weeks) and lots of time spent in hospital, we couldn’t be happier were we are right now and that we get to raise our boys so close to the beach.

What finally gave you the inspiration to set up your own business?

I have always dreamt of being my own boss rather than working a 9-5, but if it wasn’t for my boys and our situation, I am not sure if I ever would have had the courage to do so. When I first became pregnant, I was thinking I would just return to my job after the maternity leave. But having premature twins and one of my boys with chronic lung disease, it quickly became clear that I would be a Stay at Home Mum for the next years to come. So with the support of my husband, I finally had the courage to just set up a business myself.

What’s been the shining moment so far?

The interaction with customers and a launch which has surpassed all of my expectations. I started Oh Bambino because I was frustrated with the limited choice of boys’ clothing in stores. I have even bought girls’ jackets for the boys once, because they were just so much nicer. Eventually I started sourcing clothes from overseas and got so many questions about the boys’ outfits from other Mums and comments on my Instagram (@joifuljellybeans); many sharing the same frustration. And that’s how Oh Bambino was born – a Baby Boutique just for boys. Really, I am just selling items (or similar ones), which have been in my boys’ wardrobe or toy box for months and months, so I know that the products are really great, comfortable for the little ones to move around and loved by babies (well by mine anyway ;-))

How are you finding it balancing home life, children and your new mini empire?

I am still trying to find my groove. While changing jobs, my husband recently had the opportunity to spend 4 weeks at home with us, during which I launched Oh Bambino and had the chance to really throw myself into the project. So now, that we are back to reality, I am trying to find my balance. Twin life is full on and the boys are now at an age (1) where they don’t nap long and need lots of activities and outings to burn their endless energy. I am  also a bit of a workaholic, so usually at the bottom of my list is sleep, and self-care, which I do realise needs to change eventually.

What’s been the biggest challenge thus far?

Letting go. As mentioned above, I would happily work around the clock and I can always think of something that needs to be done. Especially since I can do 90% of my work from my phone, it’s easy to never stop. My kids obviously come first and during the day I don’t work a lot, but as soon as they are asleep or I am with my someone else to look after/ play with the kids (my Mum or my husband usually), I work, which is not the most social thing to do.

What’s next for Oh Bambino?

Very soon, I will be adding more items to our “Ahoy Summer!” Collection, which I am super excited about and then I will be working on our Fall Collection and hopefully a Newborn Collection as well. My ideas though are endless! I would love to set up a Pinterest account and learn more about Pinterest marketing, as well as a YouTube Channel. Step by step…

If you could give advice to a mum starting their new business, what would it be?

Just go for it! I am a bit of a perfectionist, so I set myself a date at which I was going to launch – ready or not. The reality is that as Mums we have very limited time and can never quite foresee what our schedules will really be like. If the kids are sick, I can’t work and if they go to bed 2 hours later, that cuts down my working time too. So I had to learn to give myself some slack and do the best I can with the limited time I have available. Also, there is nothing wrong with setting little goals and doing things step by step. I am currently learning as I go along, still have no idea about Facebook advertising and just set up my Paypal account. But as long as you enjoy the process, it is so worth it!

De la Vie, wall art and prints. Mums in business auckland. The Secret Coffee Group, business courses and classes for mums.

Mums in Business – Erica @ De La Vie

This week we chatted to the inspirational Erica, who has finally taken the leap and started a business – yay Erica! Erica provides stunning high quality prints to her clients via her website; you should absolutely check them out!

Erica and Ayla

Welcome Erica to The Secret Coffee Group! Tell us mums about you.

I moved to Auckland a few years ago to start studying, and got pregnant in my final year of university – unexpectedly! I’m 22, and my little girl Ayla is now 2.5 months old. My definition of me has changed and is constantly changing, but I am really enjoying the journey of motherhood so far.

What finally gave you the inspiration to set up your own business?

Being confronted with a rapidly diminishing maternity leave and knowing that I wanted the flexibility of working with my little one, rather than having to work fulltime and put Ayla in daycare. I couldn’t bear the idea of being away from her for so many hours during the week and I wanted that control to spend time with my daughter.

What’s been the shining moment so far?

Having a customer tell me their recipient cried when they revealed the print. I really strive to make a difference in people’s lives as a general part of my philosophy and to know that my work can mean that much to someone is so rewarding. I’d tried to start other businesses in the past, but to receive a response like that after just a few days of finally making the decision to commit and see this one through has been such an incredible feeling.

How are you finding it balancing home life, children and your new mini empire?

It’s been really good! My partner’s great, he comes home and plays with her when he finishes work. Ayla has somehow managed to have a great sleep routine where she naps in the day and sleeps through the night, which has allowed me to get more done than expected.

What’s been the biggest challenge thus far?

I think just managing time and having constructive time in the day based around her naps. Time management and down time versus work time requires a lot more discipline than I anticipated!

What’s next for De La Vie?

Immediately it’s creating more prints to build a larger product offering, and then focusing on a marketing plan and online presence in the new year.

If you could give advice to a mum starting a business what would it be?

It sounds cliché, but probably just going with your gut and DOING IT. Also coming from a renowned perfectionist, I can assure you that it doesn’t have to be all perfect straight away. Your vision can change as you progress.

[ How to Keep Your Idea Safe ]

This article was inspired by the mothers of my Tuesday SCG Group. How do you keep your idea safe from others? Despite getting several beautiful emails a week from mothers sharing their story and showing genuine interest in my classes, I also get emails from people regarding my business structure. Yes, imitation is the greatest form of flattery, however, business owners have worked hard to get that idea off the ground, and in some cases have the true and personal belief behind them that make them the ideal ‘cosmic owner’ of the idea.

So… what can you do to protect your baby? Your other baby. Your business. Continue reading “[ How to Keep Your Idea Safe ]”

[ Taking the Leap ]

There are certain pivotal moments in your life. Moments which change the course of the journey. Sometimes you don’t know that they are, and it’s only when you look back on them that you realise. Others require careful decision making, and you know they’ve been coming for some time.

When reading Sheryl Sandberg’s book ‘Lean In’ , there was particular moment that stood out to me. Similarly to Sheryl, I’d always organised everyone else’s ‘play.’ I even organised genuine events of play. I was bullied at school, yet this did not impact my natural ability to lead and teach. These moments where I chose to lead, seem to be pivotal moments; it was scary, yet I took the LEAP. Continue reading “[ Taking the Leap ]”

The Legend of The Buzzy Bee

Buzzy Bee. An iconic pull along toy here in New Zealand. Ironically, I didn’t buy my son’s Buzzy, but found it happily smiling on a pavement. Coincidence? I think not! Sterling (my son) adores this toy. As he’s grown, he’s been increasing the speed at which he can pull his striped friend, and the sound of it’s wings rage through the house like a pre-school rendition of Mad Max. Continue reading “The Legend of The Buzzy Bee”

5 Top cafes to Sit & Work

When I first came to New Zealand, one of the first things I noticed was the shift from ‘Pub Culture’ to ‘Cafe Culture.’ Auckland; you do not deliver on smooth traffic but you do deliver on great cafes. Thanks to this shift, I would say I’m probably addicted to coffee. Ok, I’m addicted to coffee. When I’m not hugging my trusty Nespresso machine after one of ‘those long nights’ (yes mums, I know you can relate), I’m probably getting my fix at one of these spots. Sometimes you just need a change of scenery. Continue reading “5 Top cafes to Sit & Work”

Jen’s ‘Must Read’ List

I know what you’re thinking. Who the hell has time to read these days?!

Fair point. It’s exactly how I felt any time someone suggested a book to me. That was until I discovered Audio Books, or as my Mum calls them, Talking Books. I even used to think my Mum was slightly lazy for making the decision to listen to a book over reading one. After all, to a 7 year old, reading is a much more coveted skill over listening… Continue reading “Jen’s ‘Must Read’ List”
